Town to Open Warming Centers as Frigid Cold Moves In

The Town of Huntington will operate two warming centers Tuesday as temperatures continue to drop.

The Dix Hills Ice Rink will operate from 6 a.m. to midnight, and the Senior Center will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Those using the warming centers must wear masks and have a temperature check.

Northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph will combine with temperatures in the upper single digits to the low teens late Monday into Tuesday morning. This will produce wind chills of 0 to -5 degrees.

The National Weather Service recommended residents to be prepared for the wind and cold, and dress in layers and wear a hat, heavy coat, as well as gloves. Frostbite can occur in a short amount of time.

The Suffolk County SPCA also reminded residents to keep pets indoors. Watch for frostbite; Skin can turn red, white or gray and scaly. Pets cannot be tethered or tied outside if temperatures hit 32 or below.
