Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Long Island

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Long Island  and most of southeast New York State, the National Weather Service said Monday.

Heavy winds from Tropical Storm Isaias are forecast to hit Long Island Tuesday afternoon and evening, the NWS said. While the storm is expected to weaken as it approaches the Northeast, heavy rainfall, strong winds, coastal flooding, with high surf and rip currents expected to last from Monday through Wednesday.

The weather service said heavy rain is expected with a widespread 2 to 4 inches, with localized amounts up to 6 inches a possibility. The heaviest rain is most likely to occur across New York City, Northeast New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley early Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening, and eastern sections Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night. “The strongest winds are likely to occur across Long Island, coastal Connecticut, and the New York City Metro. Dangerous marine conditions are likely across all of the coastal waters Tuesday and Tuesday night,” the NWS said.

The service said heavy winds could cause:

  • Some damage to roofing and siding materials, along with damage to porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. A few buildings could experience window, door, and garage door failures.  Unsecured lightweight objects become dangerous projectiles.
  • Several large trees snapped or uprooted, but with greater numbers in places where trees are shallow rooted. Several fences and roadway signs blown over.
  • Some roads impassable from large debris
  • Scattered power and communications outages, but more prevalent in areas with above ground lines.

Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci said, “As a safety precaution due to the pending storm, all outdoor Town facilities will be closed on Tuesday, including all beaches, skate parks, the Dix Hills Pool, the Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo Memorial Spray Park at Elwood Park as well as our summer camps and all swim programs. Stay off Huntington’s waterways; check to make sure boats at Town marinas are secured and if possible, pull moored boats out of the water and place on trailers for temporary storage. Report flooding, downed trees and wires blocking roads to Highway at 631-499-0444 or at HuntingtonNY.gov/Highway and stay safe!”

PSEG-LI said it is monitoring Isaias with crews ready to respond as needed.  To report an outage quickly and easily: reply OUT to a text or use mobile app: tiny.cc/PSEGLIapp
