Update: Group Pushes for Tougher Charges Against Driver Who Hit Protester

Update; This story originally reported that two people were hit. Police have subsequently reported that one person was hit, and charged the second with filing a false report. the first Black Lives Matter protesters pushed for tougher charges against a driver who hit two people Monday night in Huntington Station, according to Newsday.

The protesters rallied in Kings Park Tuesday.

Anthony Cambareri, 36, of Coram was driving  west on Broadway in Huntington Station about 6:45 p.m. when he struck a protester standing in the roadway, police said.

Cambareri fled the scene and was apprehended a short time later, police said. He was charged with third-degree assault and issued a desk appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in court July 24.

Protesters can be seen on video complaining that police officers treated  the incident like a routine traffic stop.
