News 12 reported Monday that some of the Covid-19 vaccines given Feb. 15 at Jones Beach were not kept sufficiently cold and were therefore “not effective.”
Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said later that 81 of the nearly 1,400 people vaccinated that day would have to be revaccinated.
The New York state Department of Health confirmed that some vaccines “were not within the required temperature range when administered and have been deemed ineffective,” News 12 said.
While the department said that the ineffective vaccine was not a threat to recipients’ health, the state said it would be contacting those who would need to be vaccinated again to schedule another appointment.
Diane Schaber of Huntington, who received her first vaccine at Jones Beach that day, said, “I want to know when I can get my shot.” She had scheduled vacation time around receiving both doses of the Pfizer vaccination and made the appointment three weeks earlier, with a second vaccination scheduled for early March.
She is hoping the rescheduling occurs quickly so she is protected and can maintain her schedule.
Jones Beach is one of several state-run mass vaccination sites around New York.
