Updated: Police Identify Men in Fatal Shootout in Commack

Update 4;20 p.m. An armed man who confronted others in a facility in Commack was killed in a shootout early Friday morning, Suffolk County police said.

A second person was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The man who was killed was identified as Stephan Harbison, 33, of Coram. The man who shot him was identified as Frenel Jean, 35, Dix Hills.

Suffolk County Fourth Precinct Police gave this account Friday afternoon:

Harbison entered the building at 450 Moreland Road, Commack at about 12:45 a.m., confronted an employee and demanded to see a resident. The employee took him to see that resident in a room, which was also occupied by a 17-year-old and a toddler. Harbison moved the three into the lobby of the facility. Soon after,  Jean, a relative of the resident, turned up and traded gunfire with the man inside and outside the facility.

Harbison was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.  Jean, who was injured in the shooting, was transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Police did not identify the resident, what had led to the shooting or respond to a question about what the facility is.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video and the investigation is continuing.

The property is identified in real estate records as home to Community Housing Innovations, which says it provides housing and human services “to support social and economic independence.” It was formerly a motel.
