Updated: Protester Struck,Injured by Car; Driver Caught After Fleeing Scene

Updated: A person participating in a protest was struck by a car driven by  a man who fled the scene but was later apprehended, Suffolk County police said Monday night.

“The man was driving a 2018 Toyota Rav4 on Broadway when he struck two Black Lives Matter protesters who were standing in the roadway,” Suffolk police said in an emailed statement.”Both pedestrians were transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver fled the scene and was apprehended a short time later.”

Arrested was Anthony Cambareri, 36, of Coram. He was charged with third-degree assault and issued a desk appearance ticket. UPDATE: He is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Central Islip on July 24.

The small crowd of protesters was on Broadway, near the Helping Hand Rescue Mission when the crash occurred about 6:45 p.m.

Monday’s incident followed several incidents around the country of Black Matters Lives protesters being struck by cars, including one protester who died Saturday night after being hit in Seattle.
