Updated: Troopers Chase, Shoot Individual With Rifle on Northern State

A driver who pointed a rifle at troopers was shot Wednesday afternoon near the Deer Park Road exit of the Northern State Parkway, New York State Police said.

Police gave this account:

About 2:20 pm, New York State Police responded to a call that someone with a weapon was driving a white Mercedes SUV on the Meadowbrook Parkway.

A short time later, another call was received that the same vehicle was on the Northern State Parkway near exit 39, and the caller advised that the driver  appeared to have an assault rifle. 

At  3:07 pm., a trooper stationary on the Northern State Parkway near exit 42 saw the vehicle pass by at a high rate of speed. 

The driver failed to stop and a chase ensued. After a short distance, the operator stopped in the roadway and then exited the SUV, with a rifle pointing it in the direction of the responding troopers.

The operator was shot by the troopers and taken into custody.  The operator was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for medical treatment.

All lanes of the Northern State Parkway have been reopened.
