Veterans Day Ceremonies Planned

Veterans Day ceremonies are scheduled Sunday to honor those who have served in the American military.

At 9 a.m., the public is invited to join a ceremony at Town Hall. The ceremony will include a performance by the Northport High School Tour Choir.

This year’s Veterans Day falls on the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, and was originally known as Armistice Day, honoring the end of hostilities on the 11th hour, 11th day and 11th month of 2018. The day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954, expanding from a focus on those who died in World War I to include all veterans.

At 11 a.m., American Legion Post 1244 will host a Veterans Day celebration at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The ceremony will include a remembrance of veterans who have passed, as well as speeches and music.

As a federal holiday, Veterans Day will be marked by many institutions on Monday.

Schools are closed, as are many banks, government offices and the U.S. Postal Service.

Last American World War I veteran.
