Veterans to Be Honored in Town, American Legion Ceremonies

The American Legion Post 1244 will honor veterans on Monday in its annual Veterans Day observance.

It is the only Veterans Day ceremony in Huntington to take place on the actual date of Veterans Day. The ceremony will be attended by many veterans, government officials and members of the public.

On Sunday, residents are invited to join Town of Huntington officials, the Veterans Advisory Board, and local officials for a Veterans Day Ceremony on Sunday at 11 a.m. on Veterans Plaza on the front lawn of Town Hall, 100 Main St., to honor veterans from Huntington and across the country.

Sunday is also the 244th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. The Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines on Nov. 10, 1775.

The Huntington Men’s Chorus will perform patriotic music and refreshments will be served following the ceremony, which will take place amidst the American flag display known as the “Field of Honor” organized by the Kiwanis Club of Huntington.

Unlike Memorial Day, which commemorates the dead, Veterans Day is intended to honor all our military veterans, including the over 18 million living men and women living veterans.

The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s organization. It was formed
in Paris on February 16, 1919 by members of the American Expeditionary Force in the
aftermath of World War I.
