Volunteers, Businesses Organize to Feed Thousands Expected for Officer’s Funeral

Greenlawn volunteers and business owners are working together to provide food for the thousands of police officers and others expected to attend the funeral of NYPD Officer Anastasios Tsakos on Tuesday.

The officer, who lived in East Northport, was killed by a driver in Queens last week while directing traffic around another, unrelated fatal accident. The driver, who fled the scene, was arrested soon after and accused of driving drunk. 

The Huntington Moose Lodge at 631 Pulaski Road, Greenlawn will be hosting mourners attending the service Tuesday at nearby St. Paraskevi Greek Church, said Maggie Weiss-Bobas, who is one of the volunteers organizing the effort.

She said that she and Katerina Serrano, who runs the Grecian Corner Cafe in Greenlawn, are organizing the effort to raise funds to help buy food from local restaurants and shops that will be feeding the mourners.

Weiss-Bobas said that the project began Sunday morning, and that numerous businesses have joined the effort.  “We’re trying to order from as many places as we can,” she said.
 
A wake is scheduled Monday at St. Paraskevi Greek Church in Greenlawn for the highway officer.
 
Tsakos, 43, was the father of two young children. He also leaves his wife, Irene.
 
Traffic in the Pulaski Road area is expected to be extremely heavy both days. Harborfields school district has put all of its schools on remote learning Tuesday, and ordered early dismissal on Monday to avoid traffic problems. Other districts are also making transportation adjustments.
