Volunteers Preparing School Supplies for Children Heading Back to Class

Volunteers are spending Monday organizing and packing school supplies to be distributed to families on Wednesday.

The Rev. Kim Gambino of Helping Hand Rescue Mission, said about 1,040 students who registered will receive supplies of binders, backpacks, paper, folders glue, markers and other materials.  There is also a waiting list to receive supplies.

She said  more earbuds are needed for students who will be working with Chromebooks. Monday morning, about 20 volunteers from the community, faith or charitable organizations sorted through mounds of supplies, some organized by age or gender, to prepare for stuffing the backpacks.

Helping Hand, Tri-CYA, Junior Welfare League of Huntington and Family Service League are running the collection and distribution, based at Huntington Assembly of God Church in Huntington Station.
