Voters Pick New State License Plate Design

The new state license plates will feature images from around New York State.

The state’s motto, “Excelsior,” Latin for “ever upward,” will appear at the bottom of the plate, while images of Niagara Falls, the Statue of Liberty, a mountain range, the Statue of Liberty, the New York City skyline and a Long Island lighthouse also appear.

State residents chose  the design, one of five possibilities, in an online poll. The Statue of Liberty or part of it  was shown on four of the five choices. One shows the bridge formerly known as the Tappan Zee but now renamed for Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s late father, Gov. Mario M. Cuomo.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo continues to face complaints about the $25 fee for mandated replacement of plates more than 10 years old. The governor had said the new plates are needed because the new design could be read by E-Z Pass and  cashless tolling systems.

The new design is expected to start rolling out in April.
