Whitman Student Podcast Examines Immigration in NPR Contest

A podcast created by students at Walt Whitman High School examining the experiences of immigrant students and parents has been ranked among the top submissions in a National Public Radio contest.

In their podcast, “Between Two Worlds” the students looked at the question, “Is it possible to strike a balance between competing ideologies?” The two juniors, Alina Naseer and Umema Siddiqui, and 12th grader Efrain Citle-Palestino talk about the culture clash between immigrants and their children, looking at such issues as hard work, pressure, sacrifice and rebellion in the context of their relationship with their parents.

The podcast entry was edited by 10th grader Benjamin Joseph, and was submitted by teacher Justin Shepherd.

NPR said it received nearly 6,000 submissions for the contest, with podcasts that touched on the “lives and experiences of immigrants: stories of students struggling with adapting to life in the U.S., or their journeys to get here, or, in some cases, reaching back a generation or two to learn about where they came from.”

The contest was open to teachers with students between 5th and 12th grade.
