2nd Update: Worker Reported Shot at in Heckscher Park

A man working for the town at Heckscher Park was shot at Monday morning shortly before 10 a.m.

Huntington schools went on a lockout,  meaning no one could leave the school buildings. The lockout was lifted, and Town Hall and the Village Green/Senior Center reopened to the public about 12:05 p.m.

A source said the employee was working when a car pulled up and someone fired a gun.

Town spokeswoman Lauren Lembo said, “Due to an active Suffolk County Police Department investigation into a shooting in the vicinity of Heckscher Park, where there are no reported injuries, out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with Town policy, Town Hall, the Village Green/Senior Center and Heckscher Park are closed and on lockdown, however Town employees are still working and Town services may still be accessed online and by phone. Our Department of Public Safety is on scene to keep the area clear for the Suffolk County Police Department to conduct their investigation.”

There were no immediate details about the shooting, said Inspector William Scrima, who was on the scene. At one point, about a dozen police officers, including Crime Scene Unit officers, were near the intersection of Sabbath Day Path and Main Street, next to Old First Presbyterian Church.

Town Councilman Gene Cook said there were no injuries sustained and that someone had shot at the worker while he was in a golf cart.
