Shelf Life: Calling All Writers

Looking for places to share your existing work, or meet like-minded people in an environment where you can create something new? Huntington is filled with writerly opportunities. Here are just a few June events for writers of all walks and abilities.

On Monday, the Long Island Writers Guild will hold their monthly writing session at Book Revue. With a pen, paper, and imagination, you will be all set to participate in this informal, no-cost, two-hour session. Join other writers at Book Revue at 7 PM. No reservation required, all levels and genres welcome. Contact Book Revue with any questions.

Elwood Public Library will host a poetry reading on Tuesday from 7-8:30 PM. Poets faced with writer’s block are encouraged to try the prompt “summer gardens, summer love,” but all topics are welcome. Tammy Green is available at [email protected] with questions.

Harborfields Public Library will also host poetry readings in the month of June; from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM on both the 13th and 27th. Registration is not required; all are welcome.

Those looking for feedback might enjoy attending the Amateur Writers of Long Island’s late June meeting, on June 23. This group gathers bi-monthly from 1-6 PM in the back room of Panera in Huntington Village. While reading is not mandatory, those looking for feedback of any form of writing (novel excerpts, short stories, poems, plays, etc.) are asked to bring 15-20 copies of their work for others to write their comments on. Guidelines and further information can be found on the group’s Meetup site.
