Downtown Huntington Project No Longer on April 11 Board Agenda

A proposal for a large mixed-use project in downtown Huntington is off the April 11 agenda of the Huntington Zoning Board of Appeals, the town announced Tuesday.

Known as Downtown Huntington, the project offered by developer John Kean and Classic Galleries owner Alan Fromkin ran headlong into such a large crowd of opponents at a Jan. 24 ZBA hearing that it was adjourned because they couldn’t all be accommodated at Town Hall. Officials had planned to move the continued hearing to Huntington High School on April 11. Instead, other items on the agenda will be heard that day at Town Hall.

Opponents said the project, which involves five parcels on Stewart Avenue,  Main and Gerard streets, is far too large for the retail area.

The developers say the project would provide needed downtown housing, and offered a plan that would include 86 apartments as well as retail.
