3rd Update: School Delays; Town Urges Caution on Slick Roadways

Multiple school districts, including Half Hollow Hills, Harborfields, South Huntington and Huntington, announced Tuesday that they will will operate on a two-hour delay Wednesday because of potentially hazardous road conditions.

Meanwhile, the town said Tuesday night that as temperatures continued to fall, “we are seeing more and more roads icing over making for hazardous driving conditions.  As Superintendent of Highways, I am asking all travelers in the Huntington area to use great caution if you must be on the roads.  Please reduce your speed and don’t tailgate.”

Residents are encouraged to avoid driving if possible. The town said that it is using a 50/50 sand-salt mixture on all roadways.  Crews will be working throught the night.
The town said it would will  working with the Second Precinct on areas of greatest need.

In addition, the REACH CYA Pre-K program will operate under a 2-hour delay and the REACH CYA Before School Child Care Program is canceled.

The town has opened its warming center at the Clark Gillies Dix Hills Ice Rink effective immediately, Tuesday until further notice.  The hours of the Center will be from 6 am until midnight.

The warming center is at 575 Vanderbilt Pkwy, Dix Hills.

There will be no ice rink activities for those using the warming center.

Temperatures could sink to a low of 19 Tuesday night, with wind chill values between 10 and 15. Northwest winds are expected at 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.

Sunny conditions are expected Wednesday, with a high near 28. Wind chill values between 5 and 15. West wind 10 to 17 mph.
