Suffolk police have blocked off a portion of New York Avenue just south of Jericho Turnpike because someone is barricaded in a house.

The incident began about 3:45 p.m. and as of about 7:40 p.m., was continuing.

Police officers addressed someone in the home just north of Greenland Drive, asking him to indicate that he heard them, to call them or pick up a landline when they called. There appeared to be little or no response.

Several police officials stood along New York Avenue, overseeing the officers. An ambulance, several police cars and vans, and a large truck brought by police were on New York Avenue or the parking lot of the Walt Whitman Shops across the street.

Several civilians came by to gawk at the scene or take pictures, and News12 was set up for reports.

New York Avenue is blocked in both directions from Detroit Road to Saddler Court.

There was no further information immediately available.
