Medical Office Use Planned for Former Lord & Taylor Store at Mall

A company that has taken over the former Lord & Taylor store at Walt Whitman Shops is seeking to convert the space into medical office use.

The Lord & Taylor chain filed for Ch. 11 bankruptcy protection in August 2020.

Town of Huntington spokeswoman Christine Geed said that LT Walt Whitman Leasehold LLC filed a site plan application in September to convert the space. ” The Town is waiting for a new set of plans to be submitted based on a site visit.  Once the Planning Board approves the plans, they will have to obtain building permits from the Building Department,” she said. “They have begun making changes to the sidewalk area outside the building, including drop-off lanes for patients.  No approvals have been issued to date.”

A sign on the building says that 120,000 square feet of space for medical/office use is available, and lists a phone number and the name HBC, or Hudson’s Bay Company. But a call to the number was not returned, and the recording does not identify the recipient. HBC is identified as the owner of the real estate where many Lord & Taylor stores were located.

A spokeswoman for the Walt Whitman Shops said it had no information about plans for the former department store.
