Run in Honor of Fallen Marine Goes Virtual

The Christopher G. Scherer I Ran the Grid race will go off Memorial Day weekend as a virtual run.

Named in honor of Marine Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer who was killed in Iraq on July 21, 2007, the race kicks off the Suffolk County veterans race series. The Scherer run in East Northport raises funds for veterans’ causes and normally draws thousands of runners and supporters to the streets around Pulaski Road School in East Northport. The event usually includes a moving ceremony involving a group reading of the names of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“This Memorial Day Weekend will be different than our traditional experience. With the inability to safely gather as usual at Pulaski Road Elementary school, this year we are going to send the Grid to you, with a “Virtual I Did the Grid”. Please continue to help us honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our great country,” the race directors.

The directors asked that those doing the virtual run, set for May 23, not gather near the school but rather complete the run elsewhere.

There is no cost to sign up but donations to veterans’ causes are welcome.
