Selmer’s Pet Land to Close After 84 Years

A long-running business in Huntington said Thursday that is closing its doors for good.

Selmer’s Pet Land in Huntington Station said it was the country’s oldest family-owned store. “We have cherished the joy and companionship our pets have brought into the lives of thousands who have walked through our doors. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen crcumstances and the difficulties of being a small busness, we have had to make the difficult decision to close our doors.”

The store, at 125 East Jericho Turnpike, sells both pets and pet supplies.  Its announcement said that it would remain open until Dec. 18, and offered  30 percent off all items in the store.

Its website refers to the store as “Long Island’s Favorite Pet Store”

A state law bans the sale of small pets as of Jan. 1.
