Tri-CYA Celebrates Black History Month

A Black History Month celebration included guitars, dance, spoken word, violin, poetry and storytelling, showcasing the talents of several young Huntington residents.

The Tri-CYA celebration at Jack Abrams STEM Middle School featured Dr. Jonathan Lightfoot from Hofstra University as keynote speaker.

The celebration’s theme, “Learning from the Past, to Build a Better Future” played out in several performances as youngsters listened to a Nigerian folktale, “Why is the Sky Far Away,” recalled the stories of enslaved people escaping to freedom, and honored musicians and others for their accomplishments.

The Town of Huntington and South Huntington school district are sponsoring a Black History Month event Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m.  at Walt Whitman High School.
