Almost $3 Million to Improve Long Island Sound

U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi said Monday that the 3rd congressional district had received almost $3 million to protect and preserve the Long Island Sound.

The Huntington Democrat said that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation have  contributed funds to the grants. The organizations receiving the grants have to match the funds.

Other funds to improve the quality of water will go to Connecticut and Vermont.

“The Long Island Sound is becoming better and more abundant, but it is not at all done and it will never be done. It’s a constant effort,” Suozzi said. “The Long Island Sound is our ‘national park,’ and we have to treat it that way.”

Some of the funds will go to restoration of Centerport Harbor, monitoring oyster sanctuaries in Oyster Bay-Cold Spring Harbor and work in Northport Harbor.
