Covid-19 Deaths Climb; Cuomo Points to Spike in LI Infection Rate

The statewide number of new Covid-19 deaths climbed to 47 Tuesday, according to New York State, spread out over 24 counties, including one in Suffolk County.

“First of all, first fact, by the current rate of increase in COVID, we’re going to see a major spike. By the current increase. Nothing else happens. You just look at the line of the COIVD increase right now, you see it going up,” Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said. “Over three weeks it’s gone up 128 percent. Three weeks. Why? All the reasons they told us. Remember they said beware the fall, beware the fall? What happens in the Fall? It gets cold people start to stay indoors, college students start to come home, there’s less outdoor activity. They talk about COVID fatigue. ‘I’m tired of being disciplined; I’m tired of wearing the mask.’ You’re seeing that spike go up now. In three weeks, we went from 1,200 cases in the state to about 2,800 cases now. Just by that current line, factor out that line, and it just keeps going up. We used to talk about flattening the curve. Long Island, 149 percent increase in three weeks, higher increase than across the state. It went from 141 cases per day to 351 cases per day.”

The positive testing rate in all focus areas under the state’s micro-cluster strategy is 4.13 percent, while outside the focus zone areas is 2.62 percent. Within the focus areas, 37,658 test results were reported Monday, yielding 1,554 positives. In the remainder of the state, not counting these focus areas, 127,103 test results were reported, yielding 3,327 positives.
