DEC Stops Project Involving Wetlands

The state Department of Environmental Conservation halted a project Monday that was underway at a private property in Halesite.

A DEC police officer went to the property at 18 West Shore Road after receiving complaints about the project, which involved work being done in freshwater wetlands. He reported that he saw heavy equipment at work, moving fill and uprooting trees.

Work was halted on the site and the owner of the property was issued an administrative ticket for conducting a regulated activity in freshwater wetlands.

DEC said it will continue to investigate the activities that occurred on the site and will issue any fines and/or restoration necessary to ensure the protection of the impacted wetlands.
