Town to Test Allowing Leashed Dogs at Heckscher Park

Dogs on leashes will be allowed in many parts of Heckscher Park for a 90-day trial, the Town Board decided Wednesday.

The trial could mean a change in the rules, passed in 2017, that allowed leashed pets in all town parks except Heckscher. But the board noted an increasing number of requests to lift the ban and so will allow dogs on a temporary basis in most of the park, except:

the playground, picnic areas and tennis courts. Dogs will be permitted on sports field only when they are not in formal or informal play.

They will be permitted in the area surrounding the Harry Chapin Rainbow Stage when there are no performances or events going on, and conditionally during performances if owners ensure that the dogs are not disruptive in any way. They will also be permitted on the walkway around the pond, but must yield to all other pedestrians.

Owners are required to pick up after their dogs.

The director of parks and recreation will report back to the Town Board on April 15 with any necessary recommendations.
