Huntington, Elwood Budgets Pass; Trustees Chosen

Huntington voters re-elected two incumbents and chose one newcomer to the Board of Education Tuesday night. Voters also easily approved the budget, 1,059-206.

Re-elected were Theresa Sullivan (882) and Thomas Galvin (856). Newcomer Dr. Annie Michaelian, who is a principal in the South Huntington district, was elected with 812 votes. Sara Baliber had 656 votes.

The budget for the next school year is $152,277,619.

They also approved a proposition to spend up to $4,565,800 to install air conditioning in the cafeteria and a new roof for Jack Abrams magnet school. It will also cover improvements to the high school auditorium and visitor bathrooms.

Elwood Budget Passes

The Elwood school budget passed 652-287, with voters also approving a proposition to spend $500,000 in capital reserve for districtwide security enhancements and purchase of districtwide maintenance and grounds vehicles. The proposition passed 714-213.  The budget is  $76,760,609.

Board president James Tomeo was re-elected with  717 votes, while Walter Edwards, the town’s deputy parks director who ran unopposed for a vacant seat, won 620 votes.
