Island Harvest celebrated its official opening of its new warehouse in Melville Thursday, with a host of Long Island elected officials and others on hand, and a display of its operations.
At more than 43,000-square feet, the new building will increase its capacity to assist Long Islanders dealing with food insecurity. It also makes room for an expansion of programs, such as job training, cooking demonstrations and computer training.
Randi Shubin Dresner, president and chief executive of Island Harvest, said the need for food on Long Island has increased, and the new facility, more than twice its previous building in Hauppauge, would help alleviate the problem.
