Parade to Send Off Whitman Team to State Basketball Finals

Walt Whitman High School will host a parade and celebration Friday to send off its girls basketball team to the state finals.

The Wildcats beat Syosset, 38-29 Sunday to capture the Long Island championship.

They are scheduled to play Saturday against Our Lady of Lourdes in the Class AAA Semi-Final in Troy, with the finals will be held on Sunday.  The Wildcats have a 21-3 record for the season.

Coach Dan Trebour, who has been coaching for 25 years, said,  “I often say you’re only as good as your seniors.” .  “And when your seniors are hardworking, unselfish kids, how can the team not be hardworking and unselfish? So I think that’s our success right there.  There’s no ego. They believe in themselves together as a team.”

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Girls Basketball Championships get underway Thursday.

The sendoff Friday is scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
