School Closings: Huntington, S. Huntington, Hills, Cold Spring Harbor, Commack, Northport, Elwood and Harborfields

Huntington, South Huntington, Half Hollow Hills, Cold Spring Harbor and Commack, Elwood, Northport and Harborfields school districts will be closed next week because of concerns about the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

A letter from Half Hollow Hills said students will be out of school from March 17-March 27 as part of spring recess; schools will reopen March 30. Monday will be a superintendent’s conference day for staff only.

Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky said the district schools will be closed all next week.Staff will be asked to report on Monday to engage
further in terms of preparing remote learning opportunities for students. “This will provide us with time to reset and reassess the situation, as well as determine what additional steps must be taken,” ¬†Polansky wrote. Friday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 26 will remain as instructional days.

South Huntington also confirmed that it will close next week. Superintendent Dr. David Bennardo said the district will continue to evaluate the situation.

Cold Spring Harbor said it would be closed starting Saturday through March 22; as a result, schools will be open on May 22 and May 26.

The Commack district posted a notice that it has decided to close for two weeks, March 16-27.¬† “Based on guidance from county, state, and federal offices, this time period of limited social contact may help deter the spread of COVID-19.”

The Elwood school district said it will close for a week, as did Harborfields.
