Several local high schools have been recognized as schools of distinction or schools of excellence for the academic performance of their athletes.
The School of Distinction status is conferred on schools having 100% of heir varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award during their respective sports seasons.
Granted distinction honors by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association are: Elwood, Harborfields, Northport and Whitman, all members of Section XI, and Cold Spring Harbor in Section VIII.
Schools of excellence have 75% of their varsity teams must qualify and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award.
Teams recognized in this category are Commack, Half Hollows East and Half Hollow West, and Huntington.

Huntington High School students are invited to participate in an intramural field hockey program. These school-sponsored sessions will include general conditioning and training along with an opportunity to learn more about the sport of field hockey.
The program will run on Thursdays Aug. 3, Aug. 10 and Aug.17 from 6:30-7:45 p.m. at the Blue Devil Stadium turf field.
Attendance at all sessions is not required.
