Schools: New Assistant Principal, Fine Arts Director

Renee Schumm has become assistant principal at Birchwood Intermediate School in the South Huntington district, succeeding Dimitri Bernadel, who became Birchwood’s principal after  Anthony Ciccarelli retired.

Schumm first joined the South Huntington District in 2013. For the last ten years, she has taught both fourth and fifth grades at Maplewood, as both an inclusion teacher and a general education teacher.

Director of Fine Arts in Half Hollow Hills

Jon Trapani has been named director of fine arts for the Half Hollow Hills district.

He will oversee the instructional areas of visual arts, music and theater.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to guide the Fine Arts department here at Half Hollow Hills,” said Trapani. “It’s an honor to work with a school district that provides many unique opportunities in the arts. I look forward to building healthy relationships with staff, students, and members of the community and bringing new ideas and opportunities to our district.”

Trapani joins the administrative team at Half Hollow Hills after spending six years as the director of Fine and Performing Arts at the Lindenhurst UFSD where he was responsible for managing the program’s curriculum and budget. Before that, Trapani worked as a middle school assistant principal and district director of music and related arts at the West Hempstead UFSD.

“We are very excited to have Jon, a very talented administrator of the arts, on our team. I know he will be able to grow our excellent arts program in Half Hollow Hills and will create many opportunities for our student artists,” said Dr. Patrick Harrigan, superintendent of schools in Half Hollow Hills.

Audit Committee Volunteers

The Northport Board of Education seeks volunteers with financial expertise to serve on the Audit Advisory Committee. The committee provides advice to the board regarding the internal and external auditors and financial control policies. Advisory members serve a two-year term. Applications are available  in the Office of the District Clerk, 158 Laurel Avenue, Northport. For additional information call 631-262-6608. Applications are due by July 31.

Pre-K Spots Open

The Elwood School District has spots open for its Universal Pre-Kindergarten program, administered by the Suffolk Y JCC in Commack.Elwood School District residents whose child will be 4 years old by Dec. 1 and will be eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2024, may sign up for the free program. Seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible families. If are interested, please contact the registration office at 631-266-5400, ext. 1455.

The Northport school district has a 2001 Blue Bird TC2000 Flat Nose schoolbus on auction.
