Campaign 2024: Avlon Endorsements, Republican Gala

First Congressional District Democratic Endorsements

Assemblymember Fred Thiele has endorsed John Avlon in his bid to defeat US Rep. Nick LaLota.

“John Avlon is the common-sense Democrat who can win this seat and solve problems for Long Island families in Congress. John has been deeply involved in community initiatives on eastern Long Island and I have been proud to partner with him to better our community. Not only is he best equipped to address compelling national issues like women’s health, affordability for the middle class, immigration reform and securing our border, but he knows Long Island.

Avlon also picked up the endorsement of Perry Gershon, who ran for nomination in 2020 in the 1st Congressional District but lost the Democratic primary, is a businessman who has been active in Suffolk County and raising money for charities as a marathon runner.

“John Avlon is the problem solving Democrat who can win back this seat. Whether it’s taking on climate change, keeping our communities safe, standing up for Social Security and Medicare, protecting a woman’s right to an abortion or fighting back against the MAGA agenda,” Gershon said. “John Avlon has shown he has what it takes. He has the energy and intellect to excite the voters of Suffolk County, including Democrats like-minded voters across party lines as well. I am proud to endorse John and know he will deliver for Suffolk County and our families.”

The First District includes parts of Huntington.

First Congressional District GOP: ‘Get Lost, George’

When George Santos, ousted from Congress and facing trial on numerous charges, announced last week that he’ll run again, US Rep. Nick LaLota immediately took to social media to respond. “To raise the standard in Congress, and to hold a pathological liar who stole an election accountable, I led the charge to expel George Santos. If finishing the job requires beating him in a primary, count me in.”

LaLota was a leading voice among Republicans to have Santos removed office.

Jewish Support for LaLota
The Republican Jewish Coalition issued support for US Rep. Nick LaLota, R-Amityville, releasing a statement from Norm Coleman, a former Minnesota senator and the current RJC national chairman, and CEO Matt Brooks.

They called LaLota “one of the impressive New York Republicans whose 2022 victory gave the GOP a majority in the House.”

They said he had “been an unflinching supporter of Israel’s right of self-defense, and he’s spoken out on the problem of antisemitism on campus.”

Huntington Republican Gala

Huntington Republicans plan a fundraiser at Del Vino Vineyard.

The Chairman’s Gala event will run from 6-9 p.m. on April 10.
