US Rep. Nick LaLota mocked one of his Democratic opponents for how he referred to Long Island in a recent online forum.
John Avlon and Nancy Goroff are running for the Democratic nomination to run against the first-year Republican, and were participating in a forum organized by Long Island Network for Change.
But, as LaLota noted, Avlon told an audience that his policies would make “life easier and better here ‘in’ Long Island.”
LaLota said of Avlon’s choice of words, “It’s rare to expose a political candidate’s fraud in a subtle three-second video clip. No, I am not talking about George Santos this time.
“In” Long Island… Not “on” Long Island as anyone with a genuine association with Long Island would say, LaLota said.
Republicans are attempting to cast the former CNN journalist as an outsider and elitist.

Democrat John Avlon announced the endorsement of the Southampton Town Democratic Committee in his campaign for the First Congressional District. He also was endorsed by the Southampton Town Democratic Committee.
Former Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said: “We need to send John Avlon to Congress to fight for Suffolk County families who need a Member of Congress that will take on the issues that matter to them, not special interests. John has the character, integrity and passion to be not only an effective Member of Congress, but someone who can help us bridge divides and solve real problems. I am proud to endorse John Avlon for Congress and know he will do tremendous work for Suffolk County in Washington DC.” Jay Schneiderman is also a former Supervisor of East Hampton Town as well as a former Suffolk County Legislator.”
State election calendar
The presidential primary will go foward April 2, even though President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump have already clinched their parties’ nominations.
Primary voting for congressional and state offices is June 15.
