Cold Spring Harbor to Offer Universal Pre-K

The Cold Spring Harbor Central School District will offer universal pre-kindergarten in the fall.

The district said that the program will run five hours per day, with two classes of 18 students, running Monday-Friday on the district school calendar. Before- or after-school child care will not be available. There will be no cost to families other than providing lunch and transportation. Each class will be taught by one certified teacher and supported by one teaching assistant.

The Pre-K curriculum will follow the state Education Department Early Education Guidelines.

All district children who are 4 years of age on or before Dec. 1 and are residents of the school district are eligible to participate in the UPK Lottery. The lottery window opened Friday and the deadline for applications is  March 18 by 4 p.m. No applications will be accepted after the deadline.

Upon the completion of the application process, each child will be assigned a number and numbers will be chosen through a random lottery system. The  lottery will take place on  March 25 at the District Office, 75 Goose Hill Road, Cold Spring Harbor, at 2 p.m. You may attend the lottery drawing in the district office. All families will receive notification of either acceptance or denial by mail. For those selected, the email notification will include next steps.

Registration for the program will follow the lottery and notification. Residency documentation will be required during the registration process. The UPK Program will be provided in at least one of the district’s elementary schools, but the location(s) has/have not yet been determined.
