Election 2024: Huntingon Democrats Back Avlon; Santos Drops Out

Huntington Democrats have endorsed John Avlon as their candidate to go up against US Rep. Nick LaLota in the 1st Congressional District.

Huntington Town Democratic Committee Vice Chair Jill Kaufman said: “We’re backing John because he’s the best candidate to take this seat back and help create a Democratic majority. The stakes in this election are too high, and by getting behind a Democrat like John, we are putting ourselves in the best position to win in the fall and then deliver on our Democratic priorities.”

Nancy Goroff, a scientist, is also running to unseat LaLota, a first-term congressman.

Some Democratic dissisdents have complained about the series of party endorsements of Avlon, citing his wealth and political inexperience. Avlon formerly worked for CNN.

Santos Bows Out

Former US Rep. George Santos, a Republican who was booted from Congress last year after

said he was ending his campaign to return to Congress as an independent. He portrayed the decision as a way of keeping the seat in Republican control.

On Twitter, he said, “I have decided to withdraw from my independent run for #NY1… I don’t want my run to be portrayed as reprisal against Nick Lalota… Although Nick and I don’t have the same voting record and I remain critical of his abysmal record, I don’t want to split the ticket and be responsible for handing the House to Dems.

“It is clear that with the rise of antisemitism in our country we cannot afford to hand the house to Dems as they have a very large issue with antisemitism in their ranks… Staying in this race all but guarantees a victory for the Dems in the race…”

He faces multiple charges of fraud and identity theft.

Condemning College Actions

Mike LiPetri, a Republican running against US Rep. Tom Suozzi in the 3rd Congressional District, criticized colleges Monday on Twitter.

“These “Ivy League” schools have went from educating students to indoctrinating them with radical propaganda and we’re supposed to just tolerate it? No thanks.. I say no more federal funding. Rely on your endowments instead. See who keeps funding you,”  tagging @Columbia, @Yale, @Harvard where protests against Israel military actions in Gaza have been continuing.
