Fitterman Updates Chamber Members on State of Hospital, Healthcare

Dr. Nick Fitterman, executive director of Huntington Hospital, gave members of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce an update Tuesday on hospital enhancements, new services, medical issues and more.

He said the Northwell Family Health Center is expected to open in April at its new home at 1572 New York Ave., Huntington Station.

Fitterman talked about lung cancer as the leading form of cancer in Suffolk County, said that since the installation of security screening at hospital entrances, several guns and knives have been found, enumerated several high rankings achieved by the hospital, and pointed to the declining life expectancy in the United States even though healthcare costs are among the highest in the world.

He also took questions from members of the audience, including one woman who questioned the salaries paid to top Northwell Health executives, saying that when she received solicitations for contributions to Northwell, she sends back a copy of the list of executives’ salaries. Fitterman said that pay to run a major medical organization such as Northwell needed to be competitive to draw top talent to the organization.
