More Than 70 Years Later, Veteran, 89, Gets His Diploma

A man who dropped out of high school in 1952 to enlist in the military received his high school diploma Tuesday at a Huntington Town Board meeting.

Harborfields Principal Marie Netto presented the honorary degree to George Kuhn, who is 89 years old. He dropped out of Harborfields High School at the age of 17 to join the Air Force, and never went back.

Walt Whitman High School English teacher Joe Pipolo, who has known Kuhn for many years, contacted Dr. David Bennardo, a former South Huntington superintendent who is now a member of Town Board, to arrange the ceremony.

Members of American Legion Post 1244 of Greenlawn participated in the presentation ceremony, which made Kuhn a member of the class of 2023.
