Schools: Awards, Scholarships for Local Students

Eleven local students have been granted the Girl Scout Gold Award for their projects assisting others.

They represent service units in South Huntington, Northport, Centerport and Dix Hills.

The Gold Award recipients are:

Jennifer Weigand, Emily Lewin, Paige MacPherson, Sophie Crowley, Francesca Ferme, Alexis Huntington, Madeline Poulis, Nina Varvatsas, Alivia Vassallo, Julianna Chin and Anika Varma,

The Gold Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by an elite group of young women who earn the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve.

“The Gold Award is the highest distinction a young woman can earn in Girl Scouting and is earned by less than 6% of Girl Scouts annually,” said Tammy Severino, GSSC’s president and CEO. “Earning this award takes an extreme amount of dedication, hard-work and commitment from each of the girls. We are incredibly proud to celebrate this distinguished class of young women and the great efforts they have made for their communities.”

To meet the Girl Scout Gold Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 80 hours toward their project.

Gold Key Honorees

Twelve Walt Whitman senior athletes were honored with this year’s Gold Key Awards, the highest honor in Section XI that an athlete can receive for sports participation. The awards were handed out during a ceremony at the Fox Hollow in Woodbury, along with the Wildcat Booster Club awards, Maroon and White Awards athletic scholarships, and the induction of the 1986 Girls Varsity Soccer Team into the Wildcat Booster Club Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Gold Key represents an athlete’s dedication and commitment throughout their high school career.  Section XI selects the recipients, recognizing athletes who letter in eight junior varsity or varsity seasons in grades 10 through 12.  It requires an athlete to also maintain a positive balance between athletics and academics.

The Wildcat Booster Club awards are recommended by coaches and are about recognizing senior student-athletes’ commitment to their sport, their team and their community.

The 1986 Girls Varsity Soccer team won the state championship.
