Spring Fling for Senior Citizens at Whitman

More than 200 senior citizens signed up for Spring Fling at Walt Whitman on Saturday where they were treated to lunch, music and dance, raffles and a musical show.

Walt Whitman math teacher Kelsey Rice said residents of Atria, Sunrise Senior Center, Brandywine, church groups, including  St. Hugh and St. Elizabeth, and others participated in the lunch.  She said it was a chance for students to interact with people from another age group and gain a different perspective, and receive community service credits.

Students and staff delivered meals and coffee. As a deejay played favorites such as Billy Joel’s Piano Man, the Village People’s YMCA and Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline, some residents sang along, danced or swayed from their chairs.

Before the event ended, students sang one of the numbers from Mamma Mia! that they were to perform later in the afteroon. The senior citizens also received tickets to that performance.
